Temple Israel marks the holiday of Sukkah

From the solemn prayers of Yom Kippur to the happiness of celebrating Sukkot, Temple Israel members joined in service and a Sukkah party on Oct. 12 at the Lawrence synagogue.

The festival of Sukkot marks the huts — sukkahs — lives by the ancient Hebrews after they wandered the desert for 40 years after being freed from slavery in Egypt and before setting in the Promised Land.

Sukkahs are constructed and families eat their meals there for the duration of the holiday, which is celebrated for at least eight days if not nine. Fruits and vegetables decorate the sukkah as the holiday also celebrates the harvesting of food.
