Two new faces will be seen around Hewlett-Woodmere School District as John Hogan was appointed the district’s interim deputy superintendent effective June 1 and Geraldine Johnson De Carlo was named the interim principal for Hewlett High School effective July 1.

The announcement was made at the May 19 Board of Education meeting.

Hogan is succeeding David Flatley, who is resigning due to personal reasons, the district said. Hogan previously served as the superintendent of West Hempstead School District from 2007 to 2016. He spent the preceding 11 years at the Elwood district as an assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and principal of John H. Glenn High School.

“I am honored to serve Hewlett-Woodmere as the interim deputy superintendent,” Hogan said in a statement. “I look forward to collaborating with the staff, parents, and students during these unprecedented times in education. It is my goal to help the district maximize students’ educational experiences while keeping health and safety at the forefront.”

De Carlo is replacing Dr. William Galati, who announced his retirement. De Carlo has more than 23 years of experience as a high school administrator. She served as the Oceanside High School principal from 2013 to 2020. Previously, she was the high school’s associate principal for 10 years.

“Hewlett High School is an extraordinary school with an exceptional staff and countless opportunities for students,” De Carlo said in a statement. “I am eagerly looking forward to becoming a member of the Hewlett High School family and working together with staff, parents, and students to further achieve academic excellence in a caring and supportive environment.”

Superintendent Dr. Ralph Marino Jr. said that both Hogan and De Carlo’s expansive educational backgrounds will make them valuable contributors to the district. “Ms. De Carlo has dedicated her career to secondary education. Her experience as a high school principal and assistant principal will allow her to hit the ground running at Hewlett High School,” Marino said. “Mr. Hogan is a veteran administrator and teacher. His years as both a superintendent and an assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction will enable him to make a seamless transition to Hewlett-Woodmere.”

A national search for a new Hewlett High principal will begin next January, district officials said.
