Understanding diverse cultures opens future doors

Posted

During the second half of the school year, students at Lawrence Woodmere Academy host both an International Day and Multicultural Day Assembly for the other students, parents, and faculty.

The cultural backgrounds of the students range from countries throughout the Caribbean, all over Europe, southern Asia and northern Africa. The purpose is to teach people how to appreciate the various cultures that exist in the close-knit community at LWA. The appreciation of other cultures aligns with the values that are placed on the students and administration at the school in Woodmere.

Students express their enthusiasm about different cultures by dancing and singing along to cultural music from around the globe. Along with assemblies, LWA students have the privilege of traveling around the world with their peers.

They have traveled to Spain, France, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and soon, they will travel to Italy. These cross-cultural engagements help to strengthen relationships in the LWA community and foster the idea of inclusiveness of all cultures.

It is important to recognize and learn about other cultures in school because it accurately represents both America and the world. Exploration of other countries causes a person to have an open mind.

Not only do you learn how one culture resembles or differs from your own, but you also learn to appreciate your own culture. Having this experience before stepping out into the real world is crucial for young people because it will help to open doors for the future.
