Since the Islanders’ season ended last month, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum floor has been dark most nights, and the public’s interest in the future of the arena surrounded by acres of concrete has been diverted as the teams of summer have taken over the spotlight. But last Wednesday morning, the Coliseum was buzzing with excitement.

The winter of 2010 was very long and stormy with a lot of snow. Spring is now here, and there is nothing like the early morning sun and to watch and listen to thoroughbreds exercising on the racetrack at Belmont Park.

Nothing could stop Belmont Park’s Opening Day from operating smoothly. The sun beamed onto the horse track, and thousands of visitors hustled to place bets and watch the races throughout the day. The excitement was palpable. Despite an overnight natural gas leak that caused the closure of Hempstead Turnpike just east of Belmont Park in Elmont for several hours last Friday, Belmont Park’s 2011 spring meet began at 10:45 a.m., as scheduled. Emergency repairs were undertaken immediately after the leak was discovered and the road was reopened just before Belmont Park’s spring meet.

Jockey Jose Lezcano not only avoided potential disaster in the first race of 2011 at Belmont Park last Friday, he rode Westside Corral to a come-from-behind victory in the nine-horse, one-mile turf event that kicked off the 56-day spring/summer meet.
Lezcano momentarily lost balance around the three-eighths pole when Westside Corral clipped heels and stumbled. Both rider and horse regained stride quickly, however, swung four-wide into the stretch and closed on frontrunners Ground Force, N.P. Cat and Seattle Mission.

Assemblyman Ed Ra recently introduced three bills that would help state off-track betting corporations, including racetracks, keep more of the money that is spent on their premises and create more business for them. Ra’s legislation reintroduces three bills offered by Assemblyman Bob Barra (R-Lynbrook) in the 2009-10 legislative session.
