We had never seen a tempest the likes of Hurricane Sandy before, one so mammoth, so fierce, that it wiped out whole shoreline communities while leaving much of the rest of the Northeast in tatters, and in the dark. Sandy, which struck on Oct. 29, 2012, was nature in its most raw and unforgiving form. It was the nightmare before Halloween.

It isn’t the fault of the Long Beach community that its medical center was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy. It may be that quite a few local residents never used the facility, but by now the entire town knows it is without a local hospital.

Sept. 21 was the 76th anniversary of the infamous Long Island Express of 1938, a massive Category 3 hurricane that slammed into the Island, New Jersey and much of New England with rare ferocity, killing 800 people and causing $308 million in damage (the equivalent of $4.8 billion today), including the destruction of 57,000 homes.

A byproduct of any disaster is a “rising from the ashes” scenario. That is what the director of operations at Jones Beach State Park, Hank Leggio said about the beach and its continuing recovery, nearly two years after Hurricane Sandy. He went on to state that aside from needed repairs, most of the additions and renovations made to the renowned state park were planned long before the storm hit.

Superstorm Sandy will be remembered as one of Nassau County’s most demoralizing calamities: the miles of rubble that choked the expanses where houses had stood in dignified symmetry, the thousands of Long Islanders living in limbo, forced to use their savings to stay afloat. People weren’t the only ones affected by the storm, though. Sandy devastated wildlife throughout Nassau’s Western Bays, which scientists had already considered to be fragile ecosystems –– many on the brink of collapse –– long before the storm.
