This year’s SIDMUN event was my first; I became a member of the Model United Nations program in September, and I’ve valued and loved every second of the program ever since. Model UN gives me more than most other clubs do; I’ve gained invaluable experience and knowledge, and had the opportunity to network with dozens of other students.

Students in the Franklin Square Union Free School District participated in the Long Island Regional Tournament for Odyssey of the Mind, a problem-solving program, on March 10 at the Rosemary Kennedy Center in Wantagh. Part of the district’s Talented and Gifted Program, this year’s event marked another success for the district.

At the Franklin Square Union Free School District’s Board of Education meeting on April 3, board members approved a 2012-13 budget of $34.43 million — a 1.5 percent increase over the district’s current budget, $33.93 million.

The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education voted unanimously on March 27 to approve the district’s 2012-13 of $167.03 million — a 2.94 percent increase over its current budget, $163.97 million.

The Franklin Square Community came together on March 31, at Washington Street School, to fight pediatric cancers. More than 150 district students, teachers and parents shaved their heads to raise money for The St. Baldrick's Foundation, a national organization dedicated to funding children’s cancer research. Hundreds more volunteered and/or attended the event.
