Holding a tiny, 2-month-old black pitbull, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray announced last Friday that the town’s animal shelter in Wantagh was caring for 11 dogs that were part of an alleged dog fighting and heroin ring that was busted last week.

Jones Beach State Park will see $10 million in additional improvements this year, continuing to build on renovations and upgrades made at the park in 2014. Aesthetic and structural improvements will be made to the bathhouses; and a new outdoor facility will promote healthy, active outdoor recreation; and there will be additional infrastructure improvements.

A new adoption season will kick off at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter on Saturday, April 11 as the shelter hosts “Spring Fling: Spring Ahead to a New 4-Legged Love.” From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., all pet adoptions are free, and adopters will go home with a free photo with their new family member.

Steve Rhoads, a Bellmore Republican, beat Rita Kestenbaum, a Bellmore Democrat, in a special election on March 10 in the Nassau County Legislature’s 19th District. Rhoads captured 58 percent of the vote to Kestenbaum's 42 percent –– a margin of 16 percentage points, according to the county Board of Elections.
