Volunteers at the Barry and Florence Freidberg Jewish Community Center in Oceanside prepared and delivered 200 traditional Passover meals on March 25. Recipients in the surrounding communities received two “Seder in a Box” dinners and a socially-distant visit.

In normal years, Purim is celebrated with large family gatherings at which relatives exchange Purim baskets, wear costumes and share a meal. Purim, or the Festival of Lots, commemorates the survival of the Jews who, in the fifth century, were marked for death by their Persian rulers.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”
The Barry and Florence Friedberg Jewish Community Center, in Ocean-side, put actions to the words of the man they were celebrating last week when they conducted their MLK Day of Service to bring people in the community together at a time when it’s difficult to impossible to gather as one.
