Some years back, I caved to familial pressure and agreed to bring a dog into our household. I had always had dogs while growing up — abroad — and they had enriched my life and the lives of others around the family. What I had not reckoned with was the paucity of facilities for dogs in Nassau County and its towns.

The holiday shopping season began with a headline-making tragedy last year: A 34-year-old temporary worker at the Valley Stream Walmart was killed when customers rushed the store at its 5 a.m. opening. Jdimytai Damour was trampled to death, and as the anniversary of this Black Friday incident approaches, our thoughts are with Damour’s family.

When Gina Capone of Valley Stream was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2000, she began scouring the Internet to find someone with diabetes whom she could talk with; someone who knew what she was going through. Capone’s aunt was the only person she knew with diabetes, and her aunt’s case was filled with complications.
