A group of Central District officials and students went to Hangar 17 at Kennedy Airport last week to inspect the rusted girder that will form the centerpiece of the monument. Sources close to Freeport Village Mayor Andrew Hardwick say he has not entirely killed plans to build a waste-to-energy incinerator in south Freeport, near the Merrick border. The incincerator would sit at the head of several tidal creeks leading into the nearby South Shore Estuary Reserve.
