Every month at high tide, when the moon is full, Bay Park resident Lenny Fiorentino wades through three to five inches of water to bring his children to day care. If a car passes while Fiorentiono is strapping his 1-year-old and 4-year-old in, water can splash as high as four feet, right onto him. If a high tide occurs on garbage day, Fiorentino also has to pick up the trash strewn across his front lawn, he said.

The East Rockaway community is mourning the loss of longtime resident Sue Daitz, who was described as a relentless advocate who never wanted to be the focus of attention, despite her efforts to help those in need. She died on Feb. 10 at age 65 after battling a brief illness.

The federal Emergency Management Agency is providing $5 million to help cover engineering costs for a planned project to send partially treated sewage from the Bay Park Water Reclamation Facility in East Rockaway to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in Wantagh, where it will be sent for discharge three miles out in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Rules Committee of the Nassau County Legislature recently approved a contract with a New York City engineering firm to review and inspect a 110-year-old, unused water pipe that runs under Sunrise Highway as a possible conduit for treated waste from the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant (now called the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility) to the outfall pipe at the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant on the Wantagh-Seaford border.
