For the sixth year , the Patrick Xavier Owens’ Games will be held at East Rockaway High School on Dec. 19, beginning at 10 a.m. The annual event, which was organized by Patrick’s brother, Alan, is in the memory of a brave young boy who died in 1997, at the age of five.

E-waste — old computers, televisions and cell phones — is growing at three times the rate of regular garbage, and contains hazardous materials that, if disposed of improperly, can impact the air we breathe and the water we drink. That’s why East Rockaway officials are ahead of the curve when it comes to recycling e-waste, which not only benefits the environment, but saves the village money.

Former East Rockaway Mayor Charles (“Charlie”) Formont died suddenly on October 21. Formont, who was known as Charlie, was a village trustee from 1987 to 1995 and served two terms as mayor from 1995 to 2003. A lifelong village resident, he was a member of the East Rockaway Fire Department and Rescue Squad for 49 years.
