Michael McHale, a 16-year-old student at Lynbrook High School, was hit by a westbound, non-passenger train at the Lynbrook Long Island Rail Road station at about 5:40 p.m. on March 9, Metropolitan Transit Authority officials said. McHale was later pronounced dead at South Nassau Communities Hospital. The Lynbrook Fire Department was called to the station platform, answering a report of a person being hit by a train, said Steve Grogan, spokesman for the department. Grogan said McHale did not respond to resusitation efforts, and was rushed to the hospital. Sam Zambuto, spokesman for the Long Island Rail Road, said that the MTA police are investigating the incident as a possible suicide. As a result of the incident, service was affected on the Babylon branch, and riders were redirected to the Long Beach branch, according to Zambuto. more
Mary Denyse Magilligan, a senior at Lynbrook High School has earned a coveted spot as a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search, one of the country’s premier high school science fairs. The school has produced five other Intel Semifinalists over the past 11 years, including 2009 graduate Jing Jian. more

A group of 26 students from Lynbrook High School’s Forensics and Legal Issues classes experienced the local judicial system up close and personal when they paid a visit to the Nassau County District Court. While they were there, they had the opportunity to meet a court officer and a judge who conducted a Q&A session dealing with the court system and jurisprudence, which generated an honest conversation about the realities of the same legal systems that they had been studying in class. more
