Live wire stops Lynbrook traffic

A 7000-volt power line shorted and fell across Merrick Road on Oct. 12, closing the busy roadway for hours. The live power line set the asphalt roadway afire and briefly caused an outage in many parts of the village, including Village Hall. more

Teachers from the Hicksville School District turned out in force to protest the proposed elimination of the county guarantee that it will pay for property-tax challenges, saying the plan would mean higher property taxes and reduced services for the schools.

The Nassau Legislature's hearing on its 2011 budget became heated on Monday over a proposal to nix the county's longstanding guarantee to pay for property owners' challenges to its tax assessments. If passed, the plan would effectively shift that burden to school districts and towns. more

When firefighters wash down their trucks after making on a run, they may have to pay a fee on that water. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, a Republican from Bethpage, has proposed a water use fee in the county’s 2011 budget. At a news conference in front of the North Merrick firehouse on Friday, Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg said the fee is really a tax. more
