No doubt, Merrick families are in the holiday spirit, adorning their homes with bright lights, lawn ornaments and other assorted decorations.
At times, the house-decorating tradition escalates into a lighthearted competition among neighbors, as homeowners try to outdo one another in festive cheer. As a result, bright lights shine through the winter darkness across the Merricks.

The Nassau County Legislature voted Monday night to approve about 380 layoffs of county employees. The layoffs could take place before the end of the month. According to Dave Denenberg, a Democrat from Merrick who represents the 19th District, the layoff plan was approved along party lines, with 11 Republicans voting for it and six Democrats against it. Two Democratic legislators were absent for the vote.

Bishop William Murphy, leader of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, said he will not meet with parents of students at Sacred Heart School in North Merrick. The parents hoped to discuss options for saving the school, which is slated to be closed next June.

The facilities referendum held by the North Merrick School District on Dec. 12 passed a public vote, with 181 yes votes and 43 no votes.
The $1.2 referendum, which includes renovations at Camp, Fayette and Old Mill Road schools, will be paid for by a capital reserve fund that was established in 2009.

The holiday season is here, and Merokeans are suddenly finding themselves full of Christmas, Hannukah and Kwanzaa spirit. The Merrick Chamber of Commerce helped spread Christmas cheer by arranging its annual Santa Claus visit in Merrick on Saturday.

The North Merrick School District will hold a facilities referendum on Monday, Dec. 12, from 2 to 10 p.m. at Fayette Elementary School, giving the North Merrick community the opportunity to vote on the expenditure of $1.2 million of a $1.4 million capital reserve fund to make repairs at Camp Avenue, Old Mill Road and Fayette elementary schools.
