I write this assuming it will be true for a lot of my readers: September 11, 2001, was the worst day of my life. It was worse for many than it was for me — I was lucky not to lose my father, a roommate and several close friends who all worked in the towers — but the anger and anguish I felt that day were the most intense I’ve ever known.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations executed more than 35 search warrants across the U.S. last week, in the wake of cyber attacks against major companies. Among the homes raided was one in Baldwin: Approximately a dozen agents arrived at the residence in question on the morning of July 19 and searched for computers and other electronic accessories.

Baldwin resident Vertus Vielot, 35, was one of 17 people indicted last week after a two-year investigation into what is being called the largest mortgage and identity theft scheme in Nassau County history. Vielot was charged under New York’s Organized Crime Control Act with 12 counts of second-degree grand larceny, first-degree scheme to defraud and fourth-degree conspiracy, and faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.

In a departure from plans made by the previous administration, Nassau County lawmakers have agreed to purchase property on Harrison Avenue and Merrick Road for the construction of a new 1st Precinct police station. The acquisition of the parcel — which is across Harrison Avenue from the existing station — puts to rest an earlier idea to lease space in the Rosen Shopping Center on Grand Avenue.
