Liquid natural gas hearing turns heated

A private company controlled by a multi-billion-dollar Canadian hedge fund is seeking approval to build a liquefied natural gas station in the Atlantic Ocean 17 nautical miles southeast of Jones Beach. If built, a pipeline extending from the station would have to hook up to an existing pipeline 2.2 miles south of Atlantic Beach. more

Hurricane Sandy destroyed a house in Baldwin Harbor. County Executive Edward Mangano has announced a “property-tax stabilization” plan that should reduce taxes on properties that Hurricane Sandy damaged and hold property taxes level for others.

County: Federal funds will offset property taxes

Nassau County will use funds from a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant to help prevent a property-tax hike that a number of county residents would have faced because of Hurricane Sandy, according to New York state’s grant proposal and state and county spokespeople. more

Future of the 1st Precinct remains uncertain

Maureen Beccaris has been an officer in the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Precinct for 26 years, but for the past six months, she said, she came to work every day not knowing where she would be the next week. She explained that her office’s supplies and papers were still in boxes, waiting to be moved to Seaford when the scheduled merger of the 1st and 7th precincts took place. more

Doing battle for Bellmore-Merrick Wellness Council's post-prom party

The Midnight Madness post-prom party for Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District students is difficult to finance, according to members of the Community Wellness Council. President Emilio Manzo said the organization planned to hold another disco night fundraiser to benefit the substance-free program until Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg suddenly suggested at a meeting that they host an all-ages battle of the bands. more

Republicans in the Nassau County Legislature modified their proposed redistricting map yesterday, backing off a plan to place a sliver of Merrick, including the home of Democratic Legislator Dave Denenberg, into the neighboring district of Legislator Joseph Scannell, a Democrat from Baldwin. Ohav Sholom celebrates 50 years in Merrick

In the spring of 1962, six local Jewish families joined to found an Orthodox synagogue in Merrick. They rented a store on Merrick Avenue to gather and pray. Half a century later, the synagogue that they founded, Congregation Ohav Sholom, boasts 300 member families, is housed in a large brick building at 145 Merrick Ave. — roughly a half mile south of the original site — and is fully integrated into the fabric of the community’s religious life. more

Legislator Denenberg, Merrick Fire Department to host blood drive

Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg, of Merrick, the Merrick Fire Department and New York Blood Center will sponsor a blood drive from 4 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Merrick fire station, at 2300 Merrick Ave. Donors, who must have a valid ID, weigh at least 110 pounds, be between 16 and 76 years old and not have gotten a tattoo in the last year, will receive two free tickets to a New York Mets game. more
