Since the Islanders’ season ended last month, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum floor has been dark most nights, and the public’s interest in the future of the arena surrounded by acres of concrete has been diverted as the teams of summer have taken over the spotlight. But last Wednesday morning, the Coliseum was buzzing with excitement.

It must not matter to County Executive Edward Mangano that so many near the Nassau Memorial Coliseum don’t want a casino in their neighborhood. Why else would he reportedly consider permitting the Shinnecock nation to build a gambling complex there.

Last week, the Town of Hempstead unveiled its long-awaited plans for the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum property. While well intentioned, there is little chance that the town’s vision — or more accurately, lack of vision — will stir anyone’s imagination or solve any of the many problems facing Nassau County.

After some seven years of studies, community meetings, press conferences and tens of millions of dollars spent on planning and consultants, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum remains an aging concrete behemoth surrounded by 77 acres of cracking asphalt. It is a glaring eyesore in one of the nation’s wealthiest counties.
