For nearly 10 years, the Herald has exposed the dire condition into which the woodlands surrounding the Meadowbrook Parkway have fallen. Vandals regularly spray graffiti on trees. Contractors dump their waste there.

Four young people escaped serious injury and possible death when the car they were riding in lost control and skidded a considerable distance, overturned and slammed into a tree on the Meadowbrook Parkway just north of Babylon Turnpike on Friday, Jan. 22. The four were trapped inside until members of the Merrick Fire Department and State Police were able to remove them through one of the car doors.
