It’s hard to imagine Rabbi Charles Klein, spiritual leader of the Merrick Jewish Centre, as a rebel. He is as friendly and mild-mannered as they come, with a smile perpetually etched across his face. The father of four and grandfather of six dresses in smart suits and is a fierce adherent of Jewish tradition. But, for a cause, he has risked arrest and even been arrested more than once. more

More than 1,000 community members attended the festivities for a night of prayer and celebration. Merrick Jewish Centre goes into Guinness record book

With 782 menorahs burning brightly on Dec. 21, the Merrick-Bellmore community made history at the Merrick Jewish Centre. More than 1,000 community members from throughout the Merricks, Bellmores and beyond joined together at the synagogue, on Fox Boulevard in Merrick, to set the Guinness World Record for the greatest number of menorahs lit simultaneously. more
