I am pleased to say that the New York State Legislature and Governor Cuomo recently worked together in a bipartisan fashion to address the right priorities needed to help our economy grow: cutting taxes, creating jobs and upgrading our infrastructure. In stark contrast to Washington, which is plagued by partisan gridlock, New York state is addressing the critical issues we face and delivering the results that residents expect and deserve.

New York state recently imposed a 2 percent tax-levy cap on school districts, forcing them to pare spending by hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, unless they can win 60 percent of the vote to override the cap.

By chance, I happened to notice that on Nov. 9, The Huffington Post reported that a potential Republican challenger to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in a 2014 gubernatorial race, was defeated in his reelection bid for Erie County executive.

Richard Dutrow Jr., 52, trainer of Big Brown, winner of the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, had his license temporarily revoked on Oct. 12 by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board for multiple rules violations — including drugging his horses — banning him from New York racetracks for 10 years.

In a 3-2 decision last Thursday, New York State Appellate Division judges upheld new boundaries drawn by Nassau Republican lawmakers for the county’s 19 legislative districts. If the state Court of Appeals rules in favor of the Republican plan on Aug. 24, the GOP’s legislative map will reshape a number of districts, including those covering the Five Towns, Elmont, Baldwin and Merrick-Bellmore.
