Publishers Clifford and Stuart Richner announced July 10 that Richner Communications has agreed to acquire L&M Publications, a Long Island weekly newspaper group that includes the Merrick Life, Bellmore Life, Freeport-Baldwin Leader and the Wantagh-Seaford Citizen. Both Richner Communications and L&M are privately held companies, and terms of the sale were not announced. The sale is expected to close this quarter. more

Seventeen years ago, Merokean Cindy Knoll was diagnosed with breast cancer. Even though she was then a patient undergoing treatment, she was also still a mother of three. The survivor said she doesn’t know what she would have done if her mother weren’t around to watch her then 1-year-old daughter and help –– and now she wants to make sure other local women battling the disease have the same support. “You love your children, but you are worried about surviving,” she said. “I had a very good support group in my family, but some people don’t, and we want to help them. “ more

On most any summer weekend, it’s easy to find sunbathers soaking up rays at Long Island’s many beaches, but whether they have taken the necessary steps to protect their skin isn’t as evident. Some 100 million Americans suffer from skin cancers and diseases, according to the American Skin Association. That’s why Bellmorite Edward Diller, a longtime supporter of the nonprofit organization, has launched the Pan Long Island Challenge to raise awareness about skin disorders as well as money for research. more
