The Merrick Fire Department is expecting thousands of mourners at a wake at Empire Hose Company for slain Nassau County police officer Arthur Lopez of Babylon Village, who was gunned down on Tuesday morning in Queens after he pulled over an ex-convict who had served time for attempted murder and drug sale.

Bellmore firefighter Justin Angell was released from Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow on Thursday morning. A little more than 24 hours before his release, Angell had been shot by a car crash victim whom he was attempting to help on Bellmore Avenue in Bellmore.

Five Nassau County gun shop owners –– including an East Meadow resident who owns a shop in Merrick and a Bellmore resident who owns shops in New Hyde Park and Seaford –– have been arrested and charged with illegally selling assault weapons, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced on Thursday. UPDATE: On April 19, 2012, all charges against Michael Marinello and South Shore Sportsman, Inc., were dismissed by Judge F. Ricigliano in First District Court, Nassau County.
