Nassau County will use funds from a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant to help prevent a property-tax hike that a number of county residents would have faced because of Hurricane Sandy, according to New York state’s grant proposal and state and county spokespeople.

Republicans in the Nassau County Legislature modified their proposed redistricting map yesterday, backing off a plan to place a sliver of Merrick, including the home of Democratic Legislator Dave Denenberg, into the neighboring district of Legislator Joseph Scannell, a Democrat from Baldwin. The plan would have removed one of the two incumbents from the Legislature.

Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg, of Merrick, the Merrick Fire Department and New York Blood Center will sponsor a blood drive from 4 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Merrick fire station, at 2300 Merrick Ave. Donors, who must have a valid ID, weigh at least 110 pounds, be between 16 and 76 years old and not have gotten a tattoo in the last year, will receive two free tickets to a New York Mets game.
