As soon as dawn breaks on typical weekday mornings, the race is on for a parking spot in the lot at the Merrick Long Island Rail Road station. Within a few hours, the lot is full, and many commuters have missed their chance. That’s the way it’s been for decades in Merrick.

The Town of Hempstead and the Long Island Rail Road will pilot a parking permit program at the Merrick and Bellmore LIRR stations in the near future. In selected lots, only town residents with valid stickers will be permitted to park. Stickers will cost $3 a year, said Mike Deery, the town’s communications director.

Q. We had an addition built over 10 years ago but we didn’t get a permit. Many laws have changed and we have to do a lot of rigamarole, and maybe even tear part of the addition apart to correct things. We shouldn’t be made to do all these changes, should we?
