A heavy rain could not stop hundreds from running or walking in the 11th annual Robbie’s Run at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick on May 22, as the event has continued to grow since its start in 2006. James Forte, a 17-year-old senior on the Calhoun High School track team, won the 5K for the second straight year, with a time of 17 minutes, 15 seconds. more

Mepham High School teacher Chris Patten will compete in the world’s oldest annual marathon –– the Boston Marathon –– on April 18. The 36-year-old Boston native will take part along with tens of thousands of other runners, while also raising money for the Red Sox Foundation, the charitable arm of the Boston Red Sox, which funds a variety of philanthropic causes. more

Josh Levine, 16, of Merrick, at right, suffered a concussion in a Kennedy High School junior-varsity baseball game last spring, when a runner slammed into him while he was playing catcher. He was knocked unconscious and now struggles to concentrate and read. He was joined here by his family in April at the annual 5K Robbie’s Run that they sponsor in honor of his late brother, who died while rounding the bases during a Little League practice. Craig Levine, a Merrick oral surgeon, leapt as he crossed the finish line of the 10th Annual Robbie’s Run, the Merrick 5K his family’s foundation held on April 26 at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School, to tap an overhanging photo of his late son, Robbie. On Sept. 27, 2005, Robbie died suddenly at the age of 9 when he his heart stopped while he was running the bases of the Lakeside baseball field visible in the background. Craig tried giving CPR to his son, but there was no AED on hand. Craig and his wife, Jill, founded Forever 9: The Robbie Levine Foundation, which since 2006 has organized the annual Robbie’s Run 5K fundraiser, to purchase AEDs for schools and youth ball fields and provide classes in CPR.

Hundreds race in Robbie’s Run

They came from Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City, upstate New York — even Virginia. Most of the hundreds of runners in the 10th Annual Robbie’s Run, however, came from Merrick. more
