Businesses slowly recover after Sandy
Rolling River Day Camp sits on five acres along Mill River, which snakes through East Rockaway and Bay Park on the way to East Rockaway Channel. The river can be a friend. It forms an idyllic backdrop for a camp replete with swimming pools, playgrounds and ball fields. It can also be a foe. During a nor’easter in 2010, Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the river inundated much of the camp, wreaking havoc. more

Dave Denenberg, a former Nassau County legislator from Merrick, offered public apologies after his sentencing for mail fraud on June 5 at the U.S. Courthouse in Central Islip. He will spend three months in jail and three months under house arrest.

A federal judge last Friday sentenced Dave Denenberg, the former Nassau County legislator who pleaded guilty to cheating a law client out of $2.3 million and resigned from office earlier this year, to three months in jail and three months of house arrest. more

Freeport resident Yves Laurore said he took into two foster care children, both teenagers, who turned on him, threatening him with violence and committing a variety of crimes. Experts say that Laurore’s situation is atypical of the foster care system, but there is growing concern nationwide about safety in the foster care system after two foster parents were allegedly murdered by the children in their care.
Foster care, the joys and dangers
Yves Laurore, a 60-year-old Freeporter and president of YLR Home Improvement, was forewarned by family and friends before becoming a foster parent. Their collective advice was the same: “Kids in the foster care system can’t be trusted. Sooner or later they’ll turn against you.” Laurore, however, was determined to open his home to Long Island children in the foster care system. more
