Peter’s Clam Bar hosted a clam-eating contest on Sunday to benefit Long Island firehouses that were damaged by Superstorm Sandy. A total of 14 contestants from Island Park Fire Department, Oceanside Fire Department, Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department, Long Beach Fire Department, North Merrick Fire Department, and Baldwin Fire Department competed in the first part of the contest . Michael Costanza, 60, a Merrick resident, retired LIRR transportation manager and a commissioner of the North Merrick Fire Department, was convicted of fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud for making false statements to the federal Railroad Retirement Board claiming that he had become disabled on the job. Costanza drew tens of thousands of dollars in disability payments.

A federal jury Thursday convicted Michael Costanza, 60, of Merrick, a retired Long Island Rail Road transportation manager and North Merrick Fire Department commissioner, of fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud. Costanza now faces a maximum of 55 years in prison. more
