Science pays for Natalie Correa of Rockville Centre, who has made it to the semifinals of the 2015 Intel Science Talent Search. In the nationwide competition, high school students conduct original, independent scientific research. Each of the 300 semifinalists wins $1,000 and an additional $1,000 for their school. Forty will be named finalists on Jan. 21, and will travel to Washington, D.C., in March and compete for $1 million in awards. more
AvalonBay’s Phase II building will be coming to Rockville Centre, but with a dozen fewer units than originally planned. At its meeting on Jan. 7, the Board of Zoning Appeals approved the developer’s plan, but reduced the number of units per acre for the Phase II addition, at 80 N. Centre Ave., from 80.6 to 75, which would cut the overall number of units from 177 to 165. more

From fire trucks to finishing Maple Avenue, the Village of Rockville Centre has lots of plans for 2015. After nearly two years of work, the construction on Maple Avenue is nearing completion. The road has been paved, and the planting of new trees began on Dec. 19. Streetscape work — the planting of flowers and bushes and the installation of new benches — will be completed next spring. more
More than two years since their merger, Central Synagogue of Nassau County and Beth Emeth Synagogue have found their harmony in sharing a space. The two congregations — the former Reform, the latter Reconstructionist — have shared the building at 430 DeMott Ave. in Rockville Centre since July 2012. more
