In response to a story, “Two village officers injured during arrest,” (Oct. 29-Nov. 4), Laura Dennis, referring to herself as "the girlfriend” of her alleged assailant, James Fowler, wrote in an e-mail and an online posting on the Herald’s Web site that information contained in the police report — and the Herald article based on it — was incorrect. Saying the story was “concocted” by police, she accused officers of using racial profiling and excessive force in making the arrest.

Rockville Centre's five school board trustees voted unanimously to accept a State Environmental Quality Review Act study that concluded that the proposed renovations of South Side High School would have “no significant adverse environmental impact.”
The vote paved the way for the board to authorize, also unanimously, a special district meeting on Thursday, Dec. 17, for the public to vote on the proposed $31.8 million bond issue referendum. Ballots will be cast that day, in the South Side High School gym, between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.

The Rockville Centre school district learned last week that it has successfully challenged a lawsuit filed over the winter by Nassau County Legislator Roger Corbin to shift the payment of real estate tax refunds from Nassau County to school districts and other local entities.

Gov. David Paterson’s dire warning last week of a $5 billion deficit in the state budget over the next two years, and his plans to address it, drew a swift — and negative —response from local officials. The governor’s plan calls for a $3 billion reduction in state spending in the current fiscal year, ending March 30, and includes a reduction in state aid to schools by about $690 million.

Science researchers at South Side High School were busy this summer investigating a variety of problems ranging from health and medicine to producing green energy. Some even came up with environmentally friendly plastics that take less space in our landfills. While high school seniors are consumed with developing and submitting college essays and applications during the fall, Science Research students have the added task of submitting papers for the Siemens-Westinghouse Science Competition.

At their first opportunity to comment on the proposed multi-million-dollar renovation of South Side High School, Rockville Centre residents voiced mixed reactions — ranging from characterizing the debt service to pay for it as “a runaway train” to a thank-you for putting the “very important” issue of the community's responsibility for the safety and health of its students before district residents.

It was an evening of food, music and camaraderie as students, parents and South Side High School faculty gathered in the auditorium of the village’s Recreation Center on Oct. 13 to kick off the school's new 180-member Best Buddies Club, with 12 special education students meeting their specially matched peer “buddies.”
