When Rockville Centre Comptroller Michael Schussheim asked the Board of Trustees to approve his changes to the village's water rates for the upcoming year, everyone at the May 25 meeting seemed shocked. Polls will be open at South Side High School on May 18 as residents of the Rockville Centre Union Free school district have the opportunity to vote on school and library budgets and elect trustees for those boards. In this at large election, three district residents are vying for two open seats on the Board of Education. The candidate who receives the second highest vote tally will be sworn in immediately to fill a vacant term that runs through June 30, 2011. The candidate who receives the highest number of votes will be sworn in on July 1, 2010 for a full three-year term as a trustee. On April 26, the Rockville Centre Village Board accepted the proposed 2010-11 budget, solidifying a 7.95 percent tax rate increase, bringing the average tax bill for a home in the village to $2,935 in the upcoming fiscal year. more
