Calhoun High School senior Emily Keller is one of only 20 Long Island students of the arts to be named scholar-artists by the Long Island Arts Alliance this year. Keller is a ballerina who plans to study kinesiology, the science of human movement, in college next year and eventually become a physical therapist.

For four years, 18-year-old Emily Keller led something of a secretive life at Calhoun High School in Merrick. At day’s end, when her classmates shuffled off to soccer or cheerleading practice, Keller darted out of the school and headed to Huntington. Over the summers, she was off to upstate Saratoga. more

In early June, Calhoun High School senior Erin Zseller will head to the war-ravaged nation of Uganda as part of a two-week volunteer mission sponsored by the non-profit organization Invisible Children. Zseller was chosen from a pool of 10 Calhoun applicants, and she will be the fourth student from the school to make the trip to Uganda in the past three years. more

In many ways, Calhoun High School senior Elise Meade is your typical teen. The 17-year-old played varsity soccer last fall. She now competes on the varsity badminton team and plays the clarinet in Calhoun’s wind ensemble. On weekends, she referees youth soccer games. more
