The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District must slash $2.2 million in spending from its 2013-14 budget to meet a state property-tax levy cap imposed by Governor Cuomo in June 2011. That could mean a wide range of cutbacks, from the elimination of summer school for all students except seniors to reconfiguring the anti-drug Athletes Helping Athletes program to reducing the number of junior-varsity games that are played in a season.

The superstorm called Hurricane Sandy will surely go down as one of the U.S.’s most costly and crippling storms, ripping a $20 billion swath of destruction up the Eastern Seaboard, and Long Island’s South Shore was front and center amid the tumult as Sandy’s northern end lashed communities from Bellmore to Valley Stream and from Long Beach to Rockville Centre.
Now, after the flooding and the fires, the anxiety and fear, the South Shore must slowly rebuild, one home, one school, one business at a time.

National organization Food and Water Watch, along with Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Reach Out America and Grassroots Environmental Education, held a public forum on April 23, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Shelter Rock in Manhasset, to rally support for a ban on hydraulic fracturing — a process that involves the injection of millions of gallons of water, chemicals and sand into shale rock formations at high pressure to break apart the rock and release trapped natural gas.
