In one of the stranger endings to any softball game, let alone a postseason matchup, a dead ball run awarded after a wild pitch with runners on first and third and one out in the bottom of the ninth pushed No. 2 East Meadow past No. 7 Mepham, 1-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs.

The oldest adage in sports states that pitching and defense wins. Sure, it’s a cliché, but it’s true. Mix in good chemistry and timely hitting, and you have the makings of a team that could contend for a championship. At East Meadow, the Lady Jets are getting all of the above on the softball field, so it’s no surprise they’re 3-1 in Conference AA-I.

The big inning that wasn’t for No. 4 East Meadow quickly became the big inning that was for No. 2 Farmingdale, as the Lady Dalers raced to a four-run lead in the first and held off the Lady Jets (11-8 overall) for an 8-5 victory to capture the Nassau County Class AA softball championship in the third and deciding game at Mitchel Athletic Complex May 26.
