The Long Island Power Authority is no longer paying taxes on properties that it owns throughout Nassau County. Instead, it’s making payments in lieu of taxes. The new payment plan, however, shortchanges school districts, officials say. Despite that, John DeTommaso, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District superintendent, above, said last week that he has no plans to exceed the state-mandated tax cap or cut services. Among his stops was WGBB radio, on Landsdowne Avenue in Merrick, where he debated Lewis Lehrman, his Republican-Conservative opponent and an investment banker.
