The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is erecting a 9/11 memorial with ‘sacred remains’ from the World Trade Center. A group of Central District officials and students went to Hangar 17 at Kennedy Airport last week to inspect the rusted girder that will form the centerpiece of the monument. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, more than 17,000 people die in drunk-driving crashes annually -- one person every 30 minutes. Officials in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and at the Community Parent Center take that statistic to heart, said Wendy Tepfer, the parent center's director. And so she teamed up with Saul Lerner, the Central District's health and physical education director, to bring an innovative anti-DWI program to Bellmore-Merrick next Thursday. more

Sources close to Freeport Village Mayor Andrew Hardwick say he has not entirely killed plans to build a waste-to-energy incinerator in south Freeport, near the Merrick border. The incincerator would sit at the head of several tidal creeks leading into the nearby South Shore Estuary Reserve.

The Long Island Crisis Center in Bellmore announced this week that the Second Annual Walk for Lyla will be held June 12 at 11:45 a.m. at the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick. The walk is held annually in honor of Lyla Stern of Merrick, a 16-year-old Calhoun High School senior who died last year. more
