Members of the South Merrick Community Civic Association recently strolled along Merrick Road on a sunny Wednesday afternoon as part of the association’s Merrick Road Improvement Committee walkthrough.

Valley Stream residents will be seeing some new additions and subtractions at the intersection of Merrick Road and Cottage Street in the coming months. A medical office is replacing the New York Golf Center location, Valley Stream Bicycle Center is moving to Lynbrook and a 7-Eleven convenience store will be replacing the Blockbuster Video store.

While Baldwin is still struggling to overhaul the fire-ravaged remains of Merrick Road near the Grand Avenue crossing, there are distinct signs of life stirring along the once-quaint small-business corridor. Openings and re-openings have become, if not frequent, then at least more frequent in the area, and now a new presence — a women’s clothing boutique called Amused — has opened its doors.
