After a months-long study, County Executive Ed Mangano has announced his intention to scale down the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Last week, Mangano formally issued a request for proposals, seeking a private company to reinvent the Uniondale complex. The plan, according to Mangano, is to downsize the arena from its current 16,000-seat capacity to the vicinity of 10,000 seats.

NHL hockey has officially returned to the Nassau Coliseum.
On Saturday, Jan. 19, more than 16,000 people arrived at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale to watch the Islanders kick off the 2013 season against the New Jersey Devils. The Islanders lost the game, 2-1, but the team’s presence alone represented a “win” for hockey fans, who endured a four month-long lockout that kept them from watching Nassau County’s lone professional sports team.

Although planning is still in the preliminary stages, funding for Nassau County’s redevelopment of the Hub area surrounding the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, in Uniondale, was given a leg up in December when the New York State Regional Development Council Initiative awarded $500,000 to the county for the project.

In three years, the New York Islanders will no longer be Nassau County's team. Islanders officials announced on Wednesday that they will be moving the team to the new Barclay's Center arena in Brooklyn, when their lease at the Nassau Coliseum expires in 2015.
