The village moved one step closer to purchasing an office building on Rockaway Avenue after an hour-long public hearing at Village Hall on Monday night. Several residents had questions about the proposed purchase, while others praised officials for making a commitment to the downtown business district.

Sip This, a coffee shop in Valley Stream's downtwon, celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 10. Owners David Sabatino and Stephanie Pontillo were joined by Mayor Ed Fare, Town Councilman James Darcy, Chamber of Commerce President Debbi Gyulay and other local business leaders.

“We got through it,” said Howie Josephson, an employee of Sunshine Blinds Inc., about Hurricane Irene. Many business owners on Rockaway Avenue took precautions before the storm, which was later downgraded to a tropical storm as it passed through the area.

Marie Roscher didn’t think she would be a crossing guard for long, according to her daughter, Kathleen. When she returned from the corner of Rockaway Avenue, Horton Avenue and Horton Road on her first day of work, she told her husband she didn’t think she could handle the job. “She said it wasn’t for her,” Kathleen Roscher said.

Valley Stream’s downtown business district has a couple of new faces and business owners are ready to serve tasty treats. Opening up a “nest” is the Chicken Coop at 159 Rockaway Ave. and ready to bring in the “dough” is the Little Sugar Shop right around the corner at 4 E. Valley Stream Blvd.
