In November 2008, the Rockville Centre Youth Council held its first official meeting. At that time, the organization was made mostly of dreams and ideas for a group that could help the youth of Rockville Centre. Today, 14 months later, with many accomplishments under its belt, the Youth Council is looking to the future. more
On Dec. 5 the Rockville Centre Youth Council hosted representatives from Phoenix House at the Public Library. Phoenix House is an organization that operates community residences throughout the United States for people who are struggling with substance abuse. The presentation involved talks from three respectable looking young men from nearby communities who happen to be recovering heroin addicts. As a teenager on Long Island, I found their message to be familiar, relevant and moving. more
Late last month, the Rockville Centre Public Library played host to the Rockville Centre Youth Council and three young men from Phoenix House, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation clinic, who talked to local teens and adults about their lives, becoming addicted to heroin and going to prison. more
