The effort to revamp Baldwin’s civic association — dormant since the 1990s — has brought many members of the community into the public eye. One of them is David Viana, an 18-year-old college freshman who looked somewhat out of place at a public meeting at the Baldwin Public Library on Oct. 22, ceding the podium to veteran public speakers like County Legislator Joe Scannell and Linda Reed of Town Councilman Anthony Santino’s office. A new playground recently opened at Julian Lane Park in Merrick. The state-of-the-art, multi-activity play structure features slides, climbers, tubes and game stations, as well as an ultra-modern safety surface intended to cushion any fall and prevent possible injury. The North and Central Civic Association hosted an “After the Holidays Egg Hunt” on Saturday, April 30, at Fraser Park in North Merrick. Eager children scoured the park in search of Easter eggs, and all ended the day with bucketfuls of goodies. Even the Easter Bunny made an appearance. The hunt was followed by a matzo ball toss. more
