Round the final bend as you’re headed south on the Loop Parkway into Lido Beach, and you suddenly spot it in the distance –– a more than 10-story, high-powered wind turbine, with its massive rotors spinning in the wind, generating electricity to power a hydrogen-fueling station at the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Conservation and Waterways.

South Shore residents accustomed to jumping in their boats and heading out for a day of clamming in Hempstead Bay will have to travel farther this spring and summer. At the recommendation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Town of Hempstead’s shellfishing areas west of the Wantagh Parkway were closed in February, with additional areas closed on April 1. Affected areas include the waters south of Bellmore, Merrick and Freeport.

Self-proclaimed conservationists Douglas and Mary Pappas, who have owned their home on Aberdeen Street for 23 years, decided they wanted to do something positive for the environment – and save a little money, too. The couple had photovoltaic solar panels added to the roof in June 2008 and is still pleased with the results.
