After Hurricane Sandy pummeled the barrier island and its residents four years ago, local, state and federal officials formulated extensive plans to rebuild the devastated city. Though Long Beach residents can now stroll on the rebuilt boardwalk, locals have continued to raise their homes and the Army Corps of Engineers has begun a large-scale coastal protection project, some proposals designed to shield the north side of the city from another storm remain in the design phase.

Charles Schumer called on the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday to allow the Town of North Hempstead and the Long Beach School District to keep millions of dollars in Hurricane Sandy relief funds, following the release of federal reports recommending that the funds be disallowed.

New York state was recently awarded a $3.2 billion settlement from Morgan Stanley after the firm’s scheme to market mortgage-backed securities contributed to the collapse of the housing market in 2008 and the ensuing recession. Ironically, the state is awarding millions of that settlement to local municipalities to clean up thousands of vacant and abandoned properties that have been dubbed “zombie homes,” many of which have been vacant since the housing crisis and Superstorm Sandy.
