For a moment, I stopped paddling and took in Merrick Bay, its virtually still surface glistening in the morning sunlight. In the distance, the Jones Beach water tower and amphitheater stood out amid a light haze. The view was, in a word, breathtaking.

Eagle Scout Charles Hillman, 19, of East Meadow, received a Certificate of Recognition from Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano at an awards ceremony in June at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola. Hillman was honored for his Eagle Scout service project, a seven-month-long reconstruction of the kayak storage area at the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick.

Beside it stood Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, who recognized the Boy and Girl Scouts who reached the highest plateaus of their proud organizations – the rank of Eagle Scout and the Gold Award.
