The Boy Scout who constructed a gazebo dedicated to slain ATF agent John Capano is now an Eagle Scout. Cory Levy received scouting’s highest honor in a ceremony at the Seaford American Legion on Nov. 28, where he was joined by about 80 family members, friends, fellow Scouts, elected officials and community leaders. more

Since the 1960s, the annual Keep-A-Merrick Beautiful contest has challenged students at local elementary schools and Merrick Avenue Middle School to think deeply about their community and the environment. 2015 was no different. This year children crafted posters and penned essays on “The Future of Merrick and the World Finding Renewable Energy Sources.” Contest winners were announced during a joyous ceremony at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick on June 2. more
With a herd of Nigerian dwarf goats eating their way through a field of mugwort weeds in the background, Town of Hempstead officials welcomed National Parks of New York Harbor Commissioner Joshua Laird to the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick last Thursday. Laird and a contingent of federal and New York City officials came to the 52-acre preserve to understand better how to convert a decommissioned landfill into a wildlife refuge. more

Bellmore-Merrick Central District Superintendent John DeTommaso recently said the district’s 2015-16 spending plan has the potential to be “one of the best budgets in Bellmore-Merrick in the last 10 years,” noting that, if passed, it would restore previously cut teaching and administrative positions and reduce class sizes, particularly for special-education classes. more
