A Suffolk County Police Department officer, who is a lifelong North Bellmore resident and commissioner of the North Bellmore Fire District, was shot twice –– once in the neck and once in the hip –– during a traffic stop in Huntington Station close to midnight on March 11, according to Suffolk police officials. After a decade of waiting, Merokeans at last got a new supermarket in downtown Merrick last Friday when Stop & Shop opened to crowds of shoppers after a brief grand-opening celebration. Fifty percent larger than the old Stop & Shop, the new one measures 24,000 square feet.
