In a press release last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office announced a an initiative to allot $300 million through the NY Rising Housing Recovery Program to help enable homeowners to elevate their property to protect against hurricane damage. This money, the Governor’s office said, was on top of the $350 that has already been promised to residents whose homes were damaged by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced last week that up to $300 million has been made available through the State’s NY Rising Housing Recovery Program to support home elevations for 6,575 homeowners. Individuals eligible for this round of funding experienced damage to their homes as a result of Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee. The Optional Home Elevation and Mitigation Initiative is being offered in addition to other housing recovery assistance that has been made available through NY Rising.

Superstorm Sandy will be remembered as one of Nassau County’s most demoralizing calamities: the miles of rubble that choked the expanses where houses had stood in dignified symmetry, the thousands of Long Islanders living in limbo, forced to use their savings to stay afloat. People weren’t the only ones affected by the storm, though. Sandy devastated wildlife throughout Nassau’s Western Bays, which scientists had already considered to be fragile ecosystems –– many on the brink of collapse –– long before the storm.
