That is what Merokean Carol Gies had to say on Monday morning about the death of Osama bin Laden, shortly after President Obama announced to the world on Sunday night that the al Qaeda leader and 9/11 mastermind was killed in a 40-minute firefight with U.S. Navy seals at a fortified compound outside of Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital.

Residents of Lynbrook and surrounding areas bowed their heads, waved flags or both as two pieces of steel from the World Trade Center towers made their way from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Oceanside Iron & Steel Supply on April 7, escorted by the Fire Riders and Patriot Guard Riders motorcycle organizations of New York and the Lynbrook police and fire departments.

The Bellmore Little League recently hosted its second annual Bruce Gary Memorial Columbus Day Tournament. Gary was a Bellmore Little League president and New York City firefighter who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

“So long as this memorial stands, so long as the village of East Rockaway endures, we will always remember the loss and feel the pain of the loved ones that you lost, and that we lost, on that horrific day.”
Those were the words of the Rev. Mark Lukens of the Bethany Congregational Church in East Rockaway as he opened the 9/11 memorial services last Saturday in Memorial Park.

Changing the venue for the East Rockaway 9/11 Memorial Service due to rain seemed like a small inconvenience last Friday evening, when almost 200 people filled Village Hall to honor, remember and pray for the victims of the tragedy that touched and, in some way, changed all of the survivors’ lives eight years ago at the World Trade Center.
