John Santopolo, 65, a well-known 5-Towns endodontist and a leader of the business community. He was killed on Monday on his way to a Nassau County Dental Society meeting, when, after trying to cross Peninsula Boulevard at South Franklin Avenue in Hempstead, he was struck by an eastbound 2011 Honda Crossover at 6:20 p.m. He was hit again by another vehicle that did not stop, according to police.

Long before he shaped the political landscape and influenced an Oscar-winning screenplay, David Garth was a Woodmere resident who was born David Goldberg on March 5, 1930 to Leo Goldberg, a lingerie manufacturer, and Beulah Jagoda, who was national vice president of the American Jewish Congress, according to a 1980 New York Times article.
