Valley Stream Cubs pack the house for Pinewood Derbies

It’s racing season again in Valley Stream. Local Cub Scouts have been taking part in the Pinewood Derby races, an annual scouting tradition.

Melanie Siegel Rubin’s south Merrick home was, like hundreds of homes across the South Shore, flooded when Hurricane Sandy struck on Oct. 29. Saltwater inundated the front entrance and back laundry room. She did not realize, however, that water had soaked through her plywood subfloor when her crawl space flooded.

There has been a lot of progress made in the rebuilding efforts since Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island in late October, but there is still work to be done. The Long Island Volunteer Center is in need of volunteers to help those impacted by the storm.

Though Valley Stream’s school buildings fared well after Hurricane Sandy, that wasn’t the case everywhere on Long Island. Several schools in Oceanside, Island Park, East Rockaway, Long Beach and other coastal communities suffered significant damage.
